The Paradox of High Intensity: Attack More, Defend Less

Running more can mean two very different things in football.

Sometimes it means you are hurting the opponent. Sometimes it means the opponent is hurting you.

That is why high-intensity distance should never be interpreted as a simple “more is better” metric. Its meaning depends on the phase of play, the tactical context and the consequence of the action.

This analysis of LALIGA EA Sports 2025/26 suggests a clear idea:

High intensity in attack tends to be productive. High intensity in defence may be reactive.

In other words: the question is not only how much a team runs at high intensity, but where, why and with what consequence.

What we analysed

The analysis was performed at team-match level, with one observation per team in each match.

We analysed high-intensity distance per minute separately in the offensive phase and the defensive phase.

Then we related those values to match result, goals scored in dynamic play and goals conceded in dynamic play.

The most important methodological decision was to compare each team against its own season average.

That matters because team profiles are different. A high value for one team may be normal for another. So instead of asking only which team ran more, we asked:

When a team is above its own usual high-intensity level in a given phase, what tends to happen?

This avoids one of the main traps of average rankings: they describe profiles, but they can hide match-by-match relationships.

The infographic shows the average profile. The deeper analysis looked at the behaviour behind it.

The main finding

The offensive signal was the clearest.

When teams were above their own offensive high-intensity average, they tended to win more and score more in dynamic play.

This pattern appeared in most teams. In the win-loss comparison, 16 of 20 teams showed higher offensive high-intensity distance per minute when they won. In the intra-team analysis, 18 of 20 teams won more often when they were above their own offensive average.

This does not prove that running more causes winning. But it does show that, in attack, high-intensity running often appears in contexts that are closer to success.

That is the key distinction.

High-intensity running in attack is valuable when it is connected to football actions that create advantage: attacking the space behind the last line, supporting the ball carrier at speed, arriving into finishing zones, accelerating after recovery, or turning possession into penetration.

So the practical message is not:

“Run more in attack.”

It is:

“Create more situations where high-intensity attacking runs are useful.”

What this looks like on the pitch

For a coach, the important question is whether the high-intensity action has tactical value.

A positive offensive high-intensity action might be a winger attacking depth when the full-back receives facing forward. It might be a midfielder breaking the line after a third-man combination. It might be a striker sprinting across the centre-back to attack the box. It might be the first three seconds after a recovery, when the opponent is open and the run converts transition into threat.

Those actions are not just physical output. They are football advantages expressed physically.

This is why offensive high intensity was the most consistent signal in the analysis. It is often linked to initiative: the team is moving the game towards the opponent’s goal.

The defensive finding is different

Defensive high intensity was not as clearly linked to success.

At aggregate level, teams showed more defensive high-intensity distance per minute when they lost. But team by team, the pattern was less stable. Only 12 of 20 teams showed higher defensive intensity when losing than when winning.

That does not mean defensive intensity is irrelevant. It means it is harder to interpret.

A high defensive value can be positive if it comes from coordinated pressure, aggressive counter-pressing, or a compact team jumping forward together.

But it can also be negative if it comes from emergency recovery runs, chasing after a broken press, defending large spaces, or running back towards your own goal after losing structure.

Same metric. Opposite meaning.

That is why defensive high intensity should be treated as a diagnostic signal, not an automatic performance indicator.

Good intensity vs bad intensity

The key for staff is to separate productive intensity from reactive intensity.

High defensive intensity may be positive when the team is compact, the pressure is coordinated, and the sprint closes a planned trap.

It may be negative when the block is stretched, the runner is recovering towards his own goal, the ball-carrier has time and space, or the action starts after a failed press or a poor loss.

So the post-match question should not be:

“Did we defend with intensity?”

It should be:

“Was our defensive intensity organised pressure or emergency survival?”

That distinction changes the interpretation completely.

Team examples

The offensive trend was strong, but not universal.

In the win-loss comparison, most teams increased offensive high-intensity distance when winning. Clear examples included Real Sociedad, Mallorca, Celta, Valencia, Atlético de Madrid, Rayo Vallecano, Athletic Club and Sevilla.

The exceptions were Barcelona, Levante, Espanyol and Oviedo, where offensive intensity was not higher in wins than in losses.

That matters. It reminds us that style, dominance, match state and opponent behaviour can change the meaning of the metric.

The intra-team result was even stronger: 18 of 20 teams won more often when they were above their own offensive high-intensity average. The only exceptions were Espanyol and Oviedo.

When looking at dynamic goals scored, 16 of 20 teams scored more when they were above their own offensive average. The exceptions were Espanyol, Levante, Oviedo and Alavés.

So the pattern is not absolute, but it is robust enough to be useful.

What to do with this as a coach

This analysis is useful only if it changes the questions asked after a match.

For offensive intensity, the staff should identify the clips where the team exceeded its own high-intensity standard and ask:

Did those runs attack depth? Did they support progression? Did they create superiority around the ball? Did they lead to entries into the final third, box entries, shots or goals?

If yes, the team is producing useful intensity.

If not, the team may simply be running without converting effort into threat.

For defensive intensity, the staff should do the opposite. When the defensive value is high, the first question should be whether the team was pressing with control or defending emergencies.

Were the runs forward and coordinated? Or were they backwards and reactive? Did they reduce the opponent’s options? Or did they come after the opponent had already created an advantage?

This is where physical data becomes tactical information.

Training implications

The objective is not to increase high-intensity running everywhere.

The objective is to increase the right kind of high-intensity running and reduce the wrong kind.

Offensively, that may mean training movements that connect intensity with advantage: runs behind the line, fast support after progression, attacking the box after wide delivery, or immediate forward runs after recovery.

Defensively, it may mean reducing unnecessary emergency running by improving rest defence, counter-pressing organisation, distances between lines, pressing triggers and protection after losing the ball.

In simple terms:

Train to run more when it creates danger. Train to run less when it only repairs danger.

Final takeaway

High-intensity distance per minute is not a conclusion. It is a question.

It asks:

In which phase did the effort appear? Was the team organised or exposed? Did the run create advantage or repair disadvantage? Did it move the team closer to scoring or simply prevent collapse?

That is the real paradox of high intensity.

In attack, running more at high intensity often reflects initiative, progression and threat.

In defence, running more at high intensity may reflect pressure, exposure and survival.

So the goal is not simply to run more.

The goal is to make high-intensity actions appear where they hurt the opponent most.
